Why choose therapy?
Have you noticed changes in yourself, or a family member that concern you? Perhaps you have talked them over with your family doctor, or a caring friend or family member who suggested counseling. Millions of people have found therapy to be helpful when life gets challenging. Often they look for a therapist who specializes in the area of greatest concern, or choose based on personality or a recommendation from a trusted source. This is why I offer over the phone initial consultations, so that you may share what you're looking for, and ask questions about my practice.
What can I expect?
Typically sessions are 45 minutes long, although they might stretch a little longer. First sessions typically use a full hour, as they require initial paperwork and time to answer any questions. Sessions may include the individual seeking counseling, the parent(s) of a child, or entire families. Young clients will need the presence of a parent for each session, while tweens and adolescents are able to attend some or part of sessions on their own. Diagnosis and working with your other providers is also a part of this process. Your session time is where we set goals, explore strategies to meet these goals, and create a plan for work between sessions. I welcome your feedback throughout the process.
When do you refer elsewhere?
Sometimes I receive a call seeking services outside my scope of practice. I provide these individuals with referrals to providers who can meet their needs. For example, I do not provide marriage or couples counseling, testing services, court recommendations for parenting schedules, or group therapy. I also refer out for problematic sexual behaviors, eating disorders, acute trauma resolution, and/or addictions. There are qualified professionals who have sought specific training in these areas, and I encourage you to contact them directly.
Can I use my insurance?
Yes. I'm an in-network provider for Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, and Connecticut's Medicaid/HUSKY program. You may also use your out-of-network benefits and HSA account to cover the cost of services. If you have questions about what your specific insurance plan covers please contact them using the number on the back of your insurance card.
